Staying safe when you feel overwhelmed

This page will help you know what help you can get and how to get it in order to keep you safe in times of distress.

  • GP – telephone lines are open at 8am-6pm Monday to Friday – please do not hesitate to call the GP and state you are calling about a mental health problem/ crisis and you would like to speak to the duty doctor.
  • GP out of hours – call NHS 111 7 days a week 24hours a day 365 days a year
  • Mental Health Crisis team number – call  0808 196 3002 or email [email protected] or visit www.mpft.nhs.uk/emergency-help for telephone support, advice and triage
  • Mental Health Community Services – 0808 196 3002 available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing support to patients, carers and partners.
  • Shout Crisis – Shout is a free, confidential, anonymous text support service. You can text us from wherever you are in the UK. If you are struggling to cope and need to talk, our trained Shout Volunteers are here for you day or night.

  • Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Wellbeing Service (IAPT) 0300 303 0923 or self-refer to www.staffsandstokewellbeing.nhs.uk for your choice of safe, convenient therapy which can be on-line, by phone or face-to-face. Monday to Friday.
  • Childline – call 0800 1111 if you are under 19 or visit www.childline.org.uk they are there for you, whatever’s on your mind. They will support you. Guide you. Help you make decisions that are right for you
  • Samaritans – call 116 123 or email [email protected] (response time is 24 hours) Whatever you’re going through, a Samaritan will face it with you. They are there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Emergency department – if you are worried you’re unable to keep yourself safe please call 999 or attend the nearest A&E directly
